Asteroid City speelt zich af rond 1955, in een fictief Amerikaans plaatsje in de woestijn. Het programma van een conventie voor jonge Stargazers en Space Cadets, waar leerlingen en hun ouders vanuit het hele land bij elkaar komen voor onderlinge kameraadschap en wetenschappelijke competitie, wordt spectaculair verstoord door wereldschokkende gebeurtenissen.
De film zal filosofisch ingeleid worden door Zofia Scattergood. Zofia is a student of philosophy and psychology with a liking for the abnormal and a feeling for the absurd. It may come as no surprise then, that she will take us on a trip through the wonderful universe of Wes Anderson. His colorful creations offer more than enough material for a thought-provoking analysis by the student associations in-house psychoanalyst.
